Sunny 16 Rule
Jul 6, 2009 Photography tips
The Sunny 16 Rule, otherwise know as the Sunny f/16 rule is a photography technique where you can correctly estimate daylight exposures without the use of a lightmeter. The rule is to set your aperture to f/16 on a sunny day and have your shutter speed set the same as your ISO settings.
For example, if you set your ISO to 100, set your shutter speed to 1/100 or 1/125 with the aperture set to f/16.
How about for other lighting conditions?
- Slight overcast – use f/11
- Overcast = use f/8
- Heavy overcast – use f/5.6
Remember to set your shutter speed nearest to your ISO settings when using the above aperture settings.
